As a rule, I say don’t buy someone else’s project. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , which means that you can realistically get it under $1k, which is below the IDGAF level. It has a Northstar V8 (IMO, one of the better V8s that GM built) and apparently ran and drove at one point. Downsides are that it’s been sitting due to a transmission problem (not just the problem with the lack of a clutch). Apparently he keeps blowing third gear. That means that you can do a manual swap and get this back where it belongs! It will also need a new wiring harness (should be cheap) and some seats. What do you think, Oppo?

On what planet is the Northstar one of the “better” V8s that GM built.
The engine was crap. Poor durability, no power and you have to remove the intake before you change the starter.

I always thought that they were a bit underdeveloped. DOHC, eventual VVT, and light internals mean that it can be a bit rev-happier than some of its contemporaries with some love.

Don’t be so harsh, I think OP meant to title this post “NOPE or NOPE.”
Also, “just swap in a manual!” does not sound very fun, probably cost more than this Fiero too....

A stock Northstar engine will run more than 8,000 rpm with just a valvespring change (of course, the factory rev limiter in the ECU must be recalibrated). The stock, hydraulic, bucket-style lifters are good through 8,500 rpm (start shifting by 8,000). The trick valvesprings and retainers are available from CHRF and bolt in to the head without machining.

A Northstar will bolt directly to the Fiero transmission with a hole cut in it for the starter.

Deathstars were the devil. Good ridance.

Nah, they just need some love. There’s so much potential that GM left on the table with these. How about just putting new valvesprings in it and safely revving to 8000?

With enough love, a lawn tractor can outrun a top fuel dragster. Is it worth it?
LS it.
While its waiting for 8k rpm, the LS will be gone.

Judging from the build threads I perused, “bolting right up” isn’t the issue. ECM/PCM shit and finding a donor manual under the price of the Fiero, for starters.

What, a Fiero transmission? It’s the same Muncie one they used in pretty much every 80s GM economy car.

Just reporting what I read from the folks who have tried this kind of thing. Everything’s simple until you try it.

And it makes like 200 hp at that stupid high rpm. Northstars are junk

Its a great motor if you like doing mid-block reseals all the time.
